Carosello 3000 gondola

The Carosello 3000 gondola is the most ambitious and technologically advanced lift in the whole Livigno ski area, and one of the most significant investments in Italian skiing in recent years.

Built by Doppelmayr and opened in 2018, this ten-seater gondola covers a 5,200-metre line and a vertical rise of 1,184 metres, arriving at exactly 3,000 metres above sea level. The round number is more than symbolic. Few Italian ski areas reach 3,000 metres, and for skiers here that height means reliable snow quality and a long season.

The Snowfield: powder at 3,000 metres

At 3,000 metres you reach the Snowfield, the wide expanse of snow at the top of the Carosello sector and the main playground for the powder hunters, fans of fresh off-piste snow, who come to Livigno.

After every good snowfall the Snowfield holds loose, soft snow that lower down would already have been changed by wind and sun. For skiers who love off-piste, these high-altitude descents are among the most satisfying in Italy.

As anywhere off-piste, you need to assess the avalanche risk and carry the right safety gear. If you would rather not go beyond the marked limits, the return slopes are always open.

A sector for every level

The Carosello sector, on the opposite side of the valley from Mottolino, is the best suited to beginners and intermediate skiers. The moderate slopes in the lower part of Carosello are perfect if you are learning or simply want to ski smoothly without tiring yourself out, and most of Livigno’s ski schools work here.

The Carosello 3000 gondola has transformed this sector too, making it appealing to skiers of every level. You ride up high, then choose whether to take the quieter way down or head further up on the other high-altitude lifts.

Views from the cabins

The cabins are heated, have state-of-the-art safety systems and large windows for panoramic views all the way up.

The view from the line is outstanding. Below you, the long Livigno valley unfolds with its string of hotels, chalets and shops, while on the horizon the Swiss peaks of the Bernina and the Engadine show off their glaciers. Even in summer, outside the ski season, riding this gondola to 3,000 metres puts you in a high-mountain world with views stretching hundreds of kilometres in every direction.

Livigno and the 2026 Winter Olympics

Livigno was chosen to host the ski cross and snowboard cross events of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. The race courses make use of the altitude and snow quality provided by the Carosello 3000 gondola and the lifts in the upper sector.

The Olympic investment brought further improvements to infrastructure, services and the overall quality of what the resort offers. The Olympic choice also raised Livigno’s international profile. Already well known and popular across Europe, it has drawn wider attention to a ski area that many experts rate as one of the best value for money in the Alps.
