The valley and its Ladin culture

Alta Badia sits in the valley of the same name, between Val Gardena and Val Badia, in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Dolomites. It is more than a ski area: it has a clear cultural identity, shaped by the Ladin community that has lived in these valleys for centuries. The villages of Corvara, La Villa, San Cassiano, Badia and La Val keep alive a minority language, Ladin, along with their own traditions, architecture and a refined mountain cuisine with no equal in the Italian Alps.

Up on the slopes, that identity takes the form of the Gourmet Skisafari, an internationally known food event that brings Michelin-starred chefs and local produce straight to the terraces of the mountain huts. In Alta Badia, sitting down to lunch at 2,000 metres is not a pit stop. It is part of the reason you came.

The slopes

The 130 km of certified runs offer real variety, spread across several distinct sectors.

Gran Risa. Above La Villa, this is the most famous run in the valley: steep, demanding and unforgiving. Every December it hosts the men’s giant slalom World Cup race, and tens of thousands of spectators line the natural grandstand of the slope. If you follow ski racing, try to see it live at least once.

Piz La Ila. Reached from Corvara, this sector has superb views of the Tofane and the Sella group, with scenic runs that suit intermediate skiers too.

Armentarola. To the west, this run winds through larch woods and snow-covered meadows, linking San Cassiano with the valley towards Cortina. It mixes intermediate stretches with long turns on open slopes.

Alta Badia is one of the four pillars of the Sella Ronda, the circuit that crosses four Dolomite passes (Gardena, Sella, Pordoi and Campolongo) and four ski areas in a single day. You can ski it clockwise or anticlockwise; the loop covers about 40 km of runs and is one of the most scenic ski tours in the Alps.

From Alta Badia you reach Val Gardena to the north and, over the Pordoi Pass, Arabba and the Marmolada to the east. Alta Badia is part of Dolomiti Superski, whose single ski pass covers more than 1,200 km of runs across the Dolomites.

When to go and snow conditions

The season usually runs from late November to early April. With the slopes between 1,500 and 2,778 metres above sea level, snow is reliable from January to mid-March. Snowmaking covers the mid-altitude sections and the valley runs, so closures are rare even in lean winters.

Christmas, New Year and February are the busiest periods: book accommodation and ski passes early. If you prefer quieter slopes, January is often the best month.

Getting there

From Bolzano the most direct route runs through Val Gardena via Ortisei, about 60 km, with manageable traffic outside peak hours. Alternatively, drive up Val Badia from Brunico to Corvara.

The nearest airports are Venice Marco Polo and Innsbruck, both less than three hours away by car or shuttle transfer. Dolomiti Bus services link Alta Badia with the main railway stations in the area throughout the winter season.
