Passo Tonale is a unique proposition in Italian skiing: a pass-situated resort at 1,884 metres straddling the Lombardy-Trentino border, combining a traditional winter ski area with the only accessible summer glacier skiing in the region. It is not a luxury resort or a social destination โ it is a resort that works, and works well, for those who put snow quality above all else.
The Presena Glacier
The defining feature that separates Tonale from every other Lombard ski area is the Presena Glacier: one of the very few remaining skiable glacial surfaces in Italy, open from December through to late July. The summit reaches 3,016 metres, delivering on clear days an unobstructed view across the entire central Alpine arc. Summer glacier snow has its own character โ granular, dry and with a compaction that in the early morning, before June sunshine begins its work, provides a glide quality almost impossible to find at this time of year anywhere else. Those who experience it once tend to come back.
The Winter Ski Area
In winter the skiable domain extends across 100 kilometres of runs on both sides of the pass, weighted towards intermediate difficulty: blue and red pistes that suit families and mid-level skiers well, with a handful of more demanding routes for those who want a sharper challenge. Worth noting: the upper sections of the resort are exposed to wind, and on days with a strong northerly some lifts may be restricted. It is good practice to check the webcams or the official site before setting out. Thirty lifts, well distributed across the area, manage guest flow effectively even in the busiest holiday weeks.
A Self-Contained Resort
Unlike Alta Badia or Val Gardena, Tonale is not plugged into a large inter-resort network. The offer is self-contained but far from incomplete: a structured ski school, equipment rental, mountain restaurants with views over the Presena, childrenโs areas with baby park and green runs. Those who choose Tonale do not need to travel โ everything is in place, at prices that are meaningfully more accessible than the major prestige resorts.
Dual Access
Logistically, Tonale commands one of the largest catchment areas of any resort in the central Alps. The Lombard flank is reached by ascending the Camonica Valley from the Brescia-Milan motorway in around two hours; the Trentino side is approached via Dimaro and Madonna di Campiglio, about ninety minutes from Trento. From Milan the total journey is roughly two and a half hours. This twin access makes Tonale a natural destination for skiers from two of Italyโs largest metropolitan areas.
Getting There
From Brescia via the Camonica Valley: approximately 2 hours. From Trento via Dimaro: around 1h30. From Milan via the A4 and then the A8 or A9 with the SS36 highway: around 2h30, with some variability depending on metropolitan traffic.
