Courmayeur is one of Europe’s most captivating ski destinations: nestled at the foot of the Italian side of Mont Blanc, it offers 145 km of slopes with breathtaking views of the roof of Europe, the famous SkyWay Monte Bianco gondola and the possibility of skiing in France via the connection to Chamonix through the Mont Blanc Tunnel.
Historic Centre: Valdostan Elegance
Courmayeur’s historic centre is one of the finest in the Aosta Valley: narrow streets with luxury shops, historic cafes and high-end restaurants animate medieval alleyways. Via Roma is the village’s living room, with the famous Caffetteria della Posta serving tea and pastries to international stars who have frequented the resort for decades.
Hotels in the historic centre range from welcoming three-stars to five-star luxury, with a refined international clientele. The Courmayeur-Dolonne-Plan Checrouit cable car departs a short walk away.
Historic centre prices:
| Category | High season | Mid season | Low season |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-star luxury | 350-700 euros | 200-350 euros | 150-200 euros |
| 4-star superior | 200-380 euros | 130-220 euros | 100-150 euros |
| 4-star | 150-280 euros | 100-170 euros | 80-120 euros |
| 3-star | 100-180 euros | 70-120 euros | 60-85 euros |
Plan Gorret and Dolonne: Close to the Lifts
Plan Gorret lies midway between the centre and the Plan Checrouit station (the resort’s mid-mountain hub at 1,700 m). Some properties here offer near-direct slope access or a shuttle to the lifts.
Dolonne is the closest hamlet to the main lifts, with the gondola departing right from here. Hotels in this area tend to be more modern and oriented specifically towards ski tourism. Prices are slightly lower than the historic centre (10-20% less) but the ski position is better.
La Palud: Gateway to Mont Blanc
La Palud is the Courmayeur hamlet closest to the Mont Blanc Tunnel and the SkyWay Monte Bianco departure station, which climbs to 3,466 m at the Pointe Helbronner with a 360-degree view across four countries.
Staying at La Palud is ideal for combining skiing with Mont Blanc excursions or for those arriving from France through the tunnel. Prices here are 15-25% lower than the centre in a quieter setting.
Apartments and Self-Catering
For families or groups, renting an apartment offers significant savings. A well-positioned apartment for four people costs between 900 and 2,200 euros per week in high season. The ski shuttle connects all areas to the lifts.
When to Book
Courmayeur is popular year-round but ski season peaks are Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays. Book at least four to six months ahead for these periods. January and early March offer the best price-to-snow ratio.
