Livigno is one of the most popular ski resorts in Italy: 115 km of slopes, duty-free status and the venue for the freestyle and snowboard events of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Finding the right place to stay means understanding the layout of the village: a long ribbon of houses and hotels that stretches for more than 10 km along the valley.
Livigno centre: Via Pemont and Via Saroch
Livigno’s shopping heart runs along Via Pemont and Via Saroch, home to the duty-free shops, restaurants and the main lifts of both Carosello 3000 and Mottolino. Stay here and you have everything within reach.
Getting to the lifts from the centre:
- Carosello 3000: gondola from the centre (Via Pemont)
- Mottolino: by shuttle bus or on foot (15-20 minutes)
- Amerikan: chairlift a few minutes from the centre

Teola and San Rocco: quiet and good value
The hamlets of Teola (north) and San Rocco (south) are less central, but their mostly family-run properties are quieter and offer excellent value. Both are served by free shuttle buses that run the length of the valley every 15-20 minutes.
Teola is especially handy if you want to ski the Carosello 3000 side, and some properties have direct access to the green runs of the Cassana area, perfect for families with children.
San Rocco lies towards the southern end of the village, 3-4 km from the centre. It is the quietest area, popular with anyone who wants to relax after a day on the slopes. Prices are on average 15-25% lower than in the centre.

Carosello and Mottolino: ski-in/ski-out
For maximum convenience, some properties have direct access to the slopes on both the Carosello 3000 and the Mottolino side. These are the most expensive options, but you can click into your skis right outside the hotel door.
The Mottolino side will host the 2026 Olympic freestyle and snowboard events, making this area particularly sought after during the Games. It has some of Livigno’s newest hotels, built specifically for upmarket ski holidays.

Livigno’s duty-free advantage
Livigno is one of the few duty-free areas in Italy, thanks to its isolated position (it is outside the EU customs territory). That means much lower prices on alcohol, tobacco, fuel and other goods. For skiers, it translates into:
- Petrol: 20-30% cheaper than at filling stations outside the zone
- Ski clothing: large duty-free shops with discounts on brands such as The North Face, Salomon and Rossignol
- Food and drink: grocery shopping is generally cheaper
- Eating out: prices slightly lower than in Cortina or Courmayeur
The duty-free savings can partly offset the cost of accommodation, making Livigno competitive even against resorts that look cheaper at first glance.
Getting to Livigno
There is no train to Livigno. The main options are:
- Car: over the Maloja Pass (Switzerland) or the Foscagno Pass (from Bormio); in winter these can close for snow
- Bus: services from Zernez (Switzerland) and from Bormio; connections with Milano Centrale (4-5 hours)
- Private shuttle: many hotels offer transfers from Milan Malpensa or Bergamo Orio al Serio airports (2.5-3 hours)

Livigno for the 2026 Olympics
The period from 6 to 22 February 2026 is already practically sold out at most properties. A few tips if you are still looking:
- Try properties in Trepalle (the high hamlet, 2 km from the centre)
- Search in Bormio (40 km, linked to the Livigno-Bormio ski area)
- Look at private rentals on Airbnb or local holiday homes
- Consider a short stay of 2-3 nights instead of a full week

How do I get to Livigno without a car?
The most practical option without a car is the bus from Switzerland: regular buses run to Livigno all year from Zernez, which you can reach by train from Zurich or St Moritz. In summer you can also come over the Foscagno Pass from Bormio. Many hotels offer a private transfer from Malpensa (€60-90 each way per person), worth considering if you are travelling as a group. There is no train station in Livigno.
Is Livigno’s duty-free worth it?
For a stay of 5-7 days, duty-free is definitely worth it. The savings on fuel (fill up your tank on the way out), ski clothing and drinks can add up to €50-150 per person. Bear in mind, though, that duty-free savings do not make up for accommodation that is much more expensive than in other resorts. If you are comparing Livigno with destinations such as Passo Tonale or Folgarida, duty-free is a real plus.
Is Livigno good for families with children?
Yes, Livigno is one of the most family-friendly destinations in the Italian Alps. The Carosello 3000 area has green and blue runs suitable for beginners, with well-equipped ski schools. Many hotels offer kids’ clubs, children’s menus and entertainment. Almost all the streets in the village are pedestrianised or have restricted traffic. The main drawback for families is how hard it is to get there without a car.
When is low season in Livigno?
Low season is November (before all the lifts open), early December and the last week of March. During these periods prices drop by 30-50% and there is plenty of availability. Some properties only open from mid-December. For good prices with excellent snow, the best times are the second week of January (after New Year) and the third week of March.
