“When is the best time to ski?” is one of the most frequently asked questions when planning a snow holiday. The answer depends on what you are looking for: fresh snow, empty pistes, low prices or long, sunny days. Here is the definitive Italian skiing calendar, month by month.

November: the early adopters

Lifts begin opening in November, but only at high-altitude stations:

  • Who opens: Cervinia (from November 15), Val Senales, Solda, Presena
  • Snow: artificial at mid-altitude, natural above 2,500 m
  • Crowds: low
  • Prices: moderate
  • Ideal for: dedicated skiers who cannot wait, pre-season training

Tips for November

  • Always verify actual opening before travelling
  • Open pistes are few, often only the summit sector
  • Snowmaking has limitations when temperatures rise above freezing

December: the season gets underway

December divides into two very different phases:

First half (1-20 December)

  • Openings: most Alpine resorts open between December 6 and 15
  • Snow: variable, highly dependent on early precipitation
  • Crowds: low (except weekends)
  • Prices: low season, excellent deals
  • Ideal for: those who want to ski cheaply on near-empty pistes

Christmas and New Year (20 Dec - 6 Jan)

  • Snow: generally good, with snowmaking support
  • Crowds: very high, the busiest week of the year
  • Prices: seasonal maximum, plus 50% on normal rates
  • Ideal for: those with no choice of dates

Advice: if you can, avoid Christmas week. The quality of the experience drops dramatically due to overcrowding.

January: the underrated month

January, especially after Epiphany, is the secret month of experienced skiers:

Second half of January

  • Snow: consolidating, frequent snowfall
  • Crowds: very low (the lowest of the year)
  • Prices: low season, discounts up to 30%
  • Daylight: short but often sunny days
  • Ideal for: the best quality-to-price ratio of the year

Why January is special

  • Pistes are perfectly groomed and virtually empty
  • Cold temperatures guarantee compact, fast snow
  • Resort staff are relaxed and attentive
  • Mountain huts have an intimate atmosphere

February: the peak

February is considered the golden month of skiing:

  • Snow: at its best, consolidated snowpack with frequent falls
  • Daylight: longer days, skiing from 9am to 4:30pm
  • Crowds: high (school ski weeks)
  • Prices: high season
  • Ideal for: those who want perfect conditions and are willing to pay more

School ski weeks

Dates vary by region. The most crowded weeks are those when multiple regions have holidays simultaneously. Check the regional school calendar to avoid peak periods.

March: spring on the slopes

March is the transition month:

  • Snow: good at altitude (above 1,800 m), melting in the valley
  • Sun: long, sunny days, skiing in a T-shirt
  • Crowds: medium, declining progressively
  • Prices: falling, good deals
  • Ideal for: relaxed skiers who love sun and rifugio terraces

The March “corn snow”

In March the snow thaws slightly during the day and refreezes overnight, creating “corn snow” (spring snow): granular but pleasant, ideal for wide carving turns. Best conditions are between 10am and 2pm.

April: the last turns

April is for purists:

  • Where to ski: only at high altitude, above 2,000 m
  • Stations open: Cervinia, Livigno, Passo Tonale, Arabba, some Dolomiti Superski stations
  • Snow: spring conditions, melting in progress
  • Prices: very low, often “closing party” with discounted ski pass
  • Ideal for: the season’s final skiers, those who love the end-of-season atmosphere

May-June: summer skiing

Only a handful of stations remain open:

  • Passo Stelvio: open from late May to November (glacier snow)
  • Cervinia (Plateau Rosa): summer skiing on the Teodulo glacier
  • Val Senales: glacier open from September to May
