The Skyway Monte Bianco is far more than a cable car: it is a masterpiece of Alpine engineering that redefined the very concept of high-altitude travel. Opened in July 2015, it replaced the historic 1947 gondola that had carried generations of climbers and tourists toward the highest peaks in Europe for nearly seventy years. The project, signed by architect Silvio d’Ascia, earned numerous international awards for its aesthetic integration into the mountain environment and its cutting-edge technological solutions.

The Skyway’s most extraordinary feature is what makes it unique in Italy and among the rarest examples in the world: the cabins rotate slowly during the journey, completing a full 360-degree turn so that every passenger enjoys a complete panoramic view of the Mont Blanc massif without having to change seats. This silent, almost imperceptible rotation transforms each ride into a contemplative experience of rare beauty.

The journey unfolds in three distinct stages. Departure is from Courmayeur at 1,300 metres, the Aosta Valley town that has always been Italy’s alpine mountaineering capital. The first stop reaches Pavillon du Mont Frety at 2,173 metres, where an Alpine botanical garden, a plant ecophysiology laboratory and panoramic terraces await. The second and culminating stage reaches Punta Helbronner at 3,466 metres, where the border between Italy and France passes literally through the terminal building.

From the summit terrace on clear days the view extends across four nations. For expert mountaineers, Punta Helbronner is the starting point for the traverse toward the Aiguille du Midi on the French side, across the celebrated Vallee Blanche glacier. The panoramic restaurant at Punta Helbronner serves refined Aosta Valley cuisine at over three thousand metres of altitude. Book well in advance on weekends and public holidays, when the 800-person-per-hour capacity fills quickly.
